Bring the Empty Jars

Watercolour of clay jars on a table as olive oil is poured into one

A widow was about to lose everything. Her husband was gone, the creditor was coming for her two sons, and all she had left in the house was one small jar of oil. That is where the prophet Elisha began.

Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few.2 Kings 4:3 · NKJV

Notice what God asked her for. Not full jars. Empty ones. And not a few. She went door to door collecting every empty vessel she could carry, shut the door behind her, and began to pour. The oil kept flowing until there were no jars left to fill.

The oil stopped when the jars ran out

The oil didn’t stop because God ran out. It stopped because she ran out of jars. The limit was never in the Lord’s supply. It was in what she brought Him.

What are your empty jars today? A tired marriage. A bank account that won’t stretch. A heart that hasn’t felt joy in a long time. Don’t hide them. Bring them. The God who filled that widow’s house has not changed, and He is not afraid of your emptiness.

A prayer for today

Faithful Provider, I bring You every empty place in my life. I don’t pretend they’re full. Pour into them what only You can give. Teach me to bring You many jars, and to trust that You will not run dry. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
